How do I create rapport in my loa?

Your letter of application is your first opportunity to build a connection with the selection panel. Help them see the person behind the application.

1. Show genuine interest in the school. Refer to something specific about its ethos, community or priorities. Explain why it matters to you.

2. Find common ground. Connect your professional values with those of the school, such as inclusion, pupil wellbeing or collaboration.

3. Make it personal. Briefly explain what attracts you to the role and why this opportunity feels like a natural next step in your career.

4. Use warm, confident language. Write naturally and professionally. Avoid overly formal phrases, exaggerated claims or language that doesn't sound like you.

5. Focus on relationships. Show that you understand the importance of working with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider school community.

My top tip: Don't just tell the panel how wonderful their school is. Show them that you understand what matters to their school community and how you could make a positive contribution.
