How do I create a letter of application that stands out?
Your letter of application is an opportunity to introduce yourself, show your interest in the role and highlight what makes you a strong candidate. Avoid simply repeating your application form.
1. Start with a confident introduction. State the position you're applying for and briefly explain why you're interested in the opportunity.
2. Show you've researched the school. Refer to something meaningful about the school's ethos, values or priorities and explain why it connects with you.
3. Highlight three key strengths. Choose three themes, such as leadership experience, communication skills or your commitment to inclusion. Use a short paragraph or heading for each.
4. Make your contribution clear. Explain how your experience and personal qualities could benefit the school community. Focus on what you can bring to the role.
5. Finish positively and professionally. Reinforce your enthusiasm for the position and express your interest in discussing your suitability at interview.
My top tip: Don't try to squeeze your entire career into one letter. Choose three things you really want the selection panel to remember about you.
